Red breeds population in Schleswig-Holstein
Red Holstein cows and Red dual purpose cows under milk control are organized as following:
- 52,505 Red Holstein cows
- 35,872 Red dual purpose breed (DN) cows
In Germany the Red breed population is divided in Red Holstein and Red dual purpose breed.
Round about 506 farms in Schleswig-Holstein raise all the Red Holstein and DN herdbook cows.

Red Holstein (RH)
- 23,853 Herdbook cows
Performance: 9,136 kg milk, 4.12 % fat, 376 kg fat, 3.36 % protein, 307 kg protein
The breeding aim are cows with a high milk performance, excellent feet and legs and healthy udders combined with a good milkability. What goes without saying for the red breeds is the high fertility combined with longevity. The modern breeding program which is accomplished with the Eurogenetic partners ensures the implementation of these demands.

Red Holstein (DN) - Red dual purpose breed (DN)
- 4,641 herdbook cows
Performance: 7,366 kg milk, 4.36 % fat, 321 kg fat, 3.49 % protein, 257 kg protein
To fulfill the requirements for the Red breed concerning range fattening resp. branded beef programs the breeding aim DN was established. The breeding program DN includes all red cows which carry up to 25 % Red Holstein blood. This step had to be taken to preserve the traditional good fattening and adaptability traits of the Red dual purpose breed.
The DN breed combines good milk performances with excellent beef performances and fitness in the best possible way. It also improves the protein amount in the milk and consequently the paid milk price.
