There are approximately 2,500 herds with 44,000 mother cows kept in Schleswig-Holstein. With an average of 17.6 mother cows per farm mother cow keeping is mostly sideline business.

For breeders the field test is an important selection aid and management control. All birth, weaned up and yearling weights of all purebred animals are taken. The VIT Verden estimates the breeding feature beef for 8 beef cattle breeds according to the BLUP-feature-animal model.

Beef cattle department of the RSH eG

The beef cattle department is the youngest part of the Rinderzucht Schleswig-Holstein eG. It was founded in the fall of 1997 and maintains 178 member farms. There are 2.167 bulls and cows of different breeds registered in the breeding book. 

The variety is large. 18 breeds are registered in the herd book while the number of cows per breed varies from 2 to 512. 

Breeding focuses on Galloway (512 cows), Angus (417 cows) and Limousin (393 cows). They are followed by Aubrac, Charolais, Shorthorn, spotted cattle beef, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Welsh Blackand and others as registered partner for cross breeding of high-quality animals of breeds used for pure and cross breeding.
